If you find eye strain is impairing your ability to work or use a computer, please call us or request an appointment online.

Symptoms of digital eye strain are often similar to other conditions. Pay close attention for:

  • Watery, tearing eyes
  • Symptoms similar to dry eye
  • Headaches after using a computer
  • Soreness in your neck, shoulders, and upper back
  • Difficulty focusing, especially after long periods in front of a computer
  • Blurry or hazy vision
  • General fatigue

A relatively new phenomenon, digital eye strain is the direct result of our increasing use of digital displays. Our eyes, which evolved over many thousands of years, are simply not equipped to handle the intense demands using digital displays place on them.

One of the biggest causes of digital eye strain is your viewing distance. In most cases, the computer or device you are using is outside of your eye’s prime focusing point (for most people, this point is 31” away from our eyes). Long periods focusing on small text on a screen can tire the eye’s focusing muscles and is a major contributing factor to digital eye strain.

Glare is another cause and is particularly harmful at night. When using a digital display, ensure that you have sufficient ambient lighting that is at least twice as bright as the display you are using. This will relieve your eyes and lessen any strain they experience.

Digital eye strain is becoming increasingly popular in our digital world. In fact, many patients we see regarding digital eye strain are teenagers and young adults.

Nearly 65% of Canadians will experience some form of digital eye strain within the next 12 months. This sizable percentage speaks to the pervasiveness digital eye strain has among our society. Luckily, in most cases, symptoms are mild and abate after a period of rest.

Preventing Digital Eye Strain

There are things that you can do to prevent digital eye strain. Try these:

  • Take frequent breaks when working at a computer, smartphone, or tablet – Follow the 20/20/20 rule- every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This will give your eye focusing muscles a chance to rest, reducing fatigue.

  • Wear glasses designed to facilitate your computer use – These glasses should also filter our high-energy light (light with wavelengths close to the harmful UV spectrum). Glasses that slightly magnify the screen will allow your eyes to better focus, reducing strain.
