Diabetes places an additional burden on your body. Extended periods of fluctuating glucose levels (especially when glucose levels are elevated), can damage the eyes and cause serious vision-threatening eye diseases.

People living with diabetes should have their eyes examined annually. A comprehensive eye exam will uncover any hidden eye health concerns, including signs of disease or damage.

As many eye diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, begin their development without symptoms, eye exams remain our best and only proactive line of defense. Being proactive towards our eye health is critical, as vision lost to eye diseases cannot be restored with treatment.

Diabetic eye disease is the term used to describe a grouping of eye diseases that are influenced by diabetes. Glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema are all inclusive of diabetic eye disease.

In the case of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, these diseases only develop in people living with diabetes. Glaucoma and cataracts, which can be developed by people with or without diabetes, are much more likely in people living with diabetes.

An annual standard eye exam, as well as any additional tests deemed necessary by our Optometrists, is financially covered by Alberta Health.

There many causes of conjunctivitis (pink eye). These range from infectious causes, such as certain bacteria and viruses that cause pink eye, to environmental and allergy-related causes.

In order to properly treat pink eye, its cause must first be determined. Treating allergic conjunctivitis with antibiotics will prove to be ineffective. Conversely, a particularly bad case of bacterial conjunctivitis will require antibiotics to clear with minimal discomfort.

Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy

Like many eye diseases, retinopathy’s initial symptoms may be subtle or hidden entirely. Changes to vision can occur gradually, taking many weeks or months before presenting signs detected by the patient.

These symptoms include:

  • Blurry, hazy, or otherwise foggy vision
  • Dark spots or blind spots in your vision
  • Impaired colour vision
  • The sudden development or a significant increase in floaters
  • Sudden significant vision loss (painless)

Diabetic Macular Edema (DME)

Diabetic macular edema is a disease exclusive to those who have diabetic retinopathy. Marked by swollen blood vessels on the macula, DME causes fluids (such as blood) to leak into the eye. This obscures vision and presents additional symptoms and risks.
