The Alberta Association of Optometrists (AAO) recommends that kids age 18 and younger have their eyes examined annually.
Our eyes change as we age, and this is especially true when we are young- a child’s eyes can change rapidly. Annual eye exams ensure that we stay on top of your child’s eye health and that any developing refractive errors are properly addressed.
Most eye exams are completed in under an hour. Due to our use of advanced imaging and diagnostic technology, our eye exams are non-invasive and completely pain free while also being extremely accurate.
We know that kids can sometimes be nervous when in the doctor’s clinic, so we ensure that your child is comfortable throughout the process.
Visual Effects is proud to offer Optomap scans for children for a nominal fee.
The Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging device. This unique piece of technology allows your optometrist to view more of your child’s retina in a single image, making it easier for them to detect small changes that may indicate eye disease or another serious condition is forming.
For more information about Optomap, please speak to your optometrist during your child’s next appointment.
We have found that the best way to get kids engaged during their eye exams, and to keep them interested and invested in their eye health, is to teach them about their eyes.
Kids love learning about cool technology and seeing pictures of their inner-eye, and we find it personally and professionally rewarding to work with kids- we can’t wait to see yours!
We direct bill Great-West Life, Blue Cross®, Sun Life®, Manulife, Industrial Alliance, Desjardins, Department of Veterans Affairs, RCMP, Canadian Armed Forces, Green Shield, Chamber of Commerce, and Standard Life are welcome too. Our clinic does the direct billing to your insurance provider.
For companies we don’t direct-bill, we provide all necessary information (receipts, prescriptions, etc.) needed to claim.
While roughly 25% of children require corrective lenses, less than half of children have had an eye exam by the time they enter school. By ensuring your child has clear vision, you are helping set them up for a successful academic career.
We know that kids can make any schedule hectic, no matter how well thought out the plan. That’s why we have convenient hours, including Saturdays. We’ll find a time that is convenient for you!
An eye exam generally takes 30-45 minutes, and older children can be left under our care while you run your errands. Our location in Melcor Centre (same building as The Bay) makes us a convenient addition to your next shopping trip.
Alberta Health provides financial coverage for annual eye exams for all children age 18 and younger.
