Our eye exams go into considerable depth and will detect new or developing cataracts.
When a cataract forms, it can take months or even years before it starts to impair your vision. In most cases, we begin routinely monitoring and otherwise observing the cataracts.
During its early stages we can often compensate for its effects via corrective lenses and some small lifestyle changes. When cataracts impair vision, we then consider cataract removal surgery as the next step.
Cataract removal surgery is the only proven treatment for cataracts. This safe surgical procedure centres around removing your eye’s natural cataract-stricken lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL then assumes the same role as the natural lens.
This surgery is extremely safe, with a success rate north of 95%. If your cataracts are impairing your ability to perform tasks associated with work or leisure, you may be a candidate for surgery.
Expect the surgery to last roughly 30 minutes, with minimal discomfort during and immediately after surgery. Symptoms such as eye irritation, conjunctivitis, and blurry vision may persist for a few days post surgery. We will let you know what to expect, and when to come see us for treatment.
If we determine that you are a candidate for cataract removal surgery, we will refer you to a local Ophthalmologist. Prior to meeting with the Ophthalmologist, we will take detailed measurements of your eye; these measurements are used to inform which IOL is used.
We will meet with you within 24 hours of surgery to assess your eyes and to ensure they are healing as expected. If necessary, we will prescribe eye drops or oral medication to deal with any pain or irritation.
While it’s true that the likelihood of developing cataracts increases significantly with age, our ability to compensate for and treat cataracts is better today than ever before.
At Visual Effects, we’ve worked with and supported hundreds of people from all across Southern Alberta. Working together, we help manage their cataracts, adapt to changes in their vision, and help determine their candidacy for cataract removal surgery.
